Dr. Yılmaz completed his Psychiatry residency at Istanbul University Cerrahpasa School of Medicine. He started his fellowship at Basel University in Switzerland in 1991. During his time in Basel, he served in several posts and took on many responsibilities that include but are not limited to the following:
Director of Basel University’s Center for Crisis Intervention: This center provides outpatient and inpatient psychotherapy, and phone consultation and guidance by experts who are available 24/7 to help with acute emotional problems of personal, relational, domestic and professional nature. Between the years 1992 and 2000, under the leadership of Dr. Yılmaz, the center provided services to over 7500 individuals, couples, employees and managers (This number does not include phone consultations). The center’s capacity increased by more than 100% during this period.
Deputy Chairman of the Psychiatry Department at Basel University: Dr. Yılmaz also served as the Quality Management Coordinator, Chief of Social Psychiatry and Psychology Department, President of the Basel Foundation for Alcohol and Substance Abuse Consulting Center, Director of Acute Psychiatry Ward, and Departmental Executive Board Member.
As chairman of Cultural and Mental Health Department at Basel University, Dr. Yılmaz promoted research, training and lectures for improving the cultural competence of those working in the fields of psychology and psychiatry, and lead the way in increasing the quality standards of individual and group therapies. He has provided cultural adaptation consulting to expatriates working in various industries in Switzerland.
Dr. Yılmaz, who has lectured in over 300 international conferences, workshops and seminars, has also taught or lead workshops as a visiting scholar at Heidelberg University, Zurich ETH Technical University, Bern University, Zurich University and UCLA. His publications, which include several books and scientific papers, were cited by more than 100 scientific publications.
